The Cicada Man

The Cicada Man disguised himself as a human in order to steal the Tilsonite meteor, needing it to control two arriving Garamons. Hiding out within the forests of Japan, the alien being ordered the pair of giants to rip Tokyo apart, but he didn’t expect humanity to track him down. Upon arriving, the soldiers’ weapons levitated out of their hands and fired on them, ending their lives.

The technology of the Cicada Man was great, but Jun managed to knock the device out of the alien’s hands. As his plans began to fall apart, the being was shot, forcing him to give up his human disguise and reveal his true appearance. Having lost the meteor and the pair of Garamons, the creature stumbled to the alien ship emerging from the lake. His own kind would not forgive his failure and executed the fiend in a beam of light, igniting the creature in a blistering inferno. Garamon Strikes Back

Trivia

  • Actor: Michio Yoshihisa
  • The original Cicada Man suit was later made into the first Alien Baltan suit.
    • Besides the fact that the first Baltan suit was made from the Cicada Man suit, the Baltans also used the same ship model as the Cicada Humans in episode 2 of Ultraman. It was later turned upside down and reused for Alien Mefilas' spaceship.
  • In an unrealized script both the Cicada Man, who survived his being set ablaze, and the returned-to-Earth M1 fight a revived Gorgos.

Ultra Q: Dark Fantasy

Cicada lady

The Cicada Woman.

Although unseen, the Cicada Woman (セミ女, Semi On'na) attempted to invade Earth with Gara Q and Garagon, but her plans were thwarted by Kakunoshin Watarai, Ryo Kusunoki, and Goichi Sakamoto. Dancing Garagon

Some time after this, the Cicada Woman emerged from the back of a glowing cicada nymph with a human appearance. Stark naked, she approached a terrified policeman and impaled him through the head with her proboscis. Under the name Ruriko (ルリ子), she acted as one of Ryo's neighbours to accuse her Gara Q of stealing jewelry and money from others in their apartment building, prompting Ryo to return the robot to Watarai. As he worked during the night, the Cicada Woman appeared in her true form and put him to sleep, allowing her to control Gara Q and use it to hack into a government database and transfer money from banks into Watarai's account. Federal agents arrived at the professor's office the next day and accused him of said crimes, but still lethargic, he was unable to explain himself.

Shortly after, the Cicada Woman kidnapped Watarai and left a fake confession about his hacking on his website, all to ruin his reputation. Ryo's Gara Q was able to lead her to Watarai's location, an abandoned building where the Cicada Woman had been watching his office through hidden cameras. The being appeared before Ryo, revealing her disguise and explaining that she awakened solely to get revenge on Watarai for ruining the Gara Q invasion plan. Nearby, the professor had been tied to a chair with a time bomb strapped to his neck. Goichi tried to attack the Cicada Woman with a lead pipe, although it had no effect. As she approached the trio, Ryo's Gara Q fruitlessly leapt towards the villain to protect them, but the Cicada Woman kicked it aside and ruthlessly began to whip the robot, aggravated that it had grown attached to humans.

This diversion allowed the three to escape the building, but the Cicada Woman summoned Garagon II and commanded it to annihilate them. Determined to save the trio, Gara Q began to play its song and extended a satellite dish from its head, which reflected one of Garagon's lasers into both the monster and its master, destroying them both simultaneously. With the day saved, they returned to Watarai's office. As Gara Q danced its song in celebration, Goichi wondered what the Cicada Woman's greater goal truly was. Gara Q's Revenge

CicadaHumans EnsembleQ

Ensemble Q

Sixty years ago, a group of four Cicada Men arrived on Earth with the intention to pillage and steal as much as they could upon Garamon's arrival, and their leader assumed the human alias of Hoichi Tsukushi (筑士 芳一, Tsukushi Hōichi). After activating the summoning device, the aliens intended to simply bide their time until the arrival of the Tilsonite meteorite that contained Garamon, but as they left the area where they set down the device, they happened to approach a house where a gramophone was playing, introducing them to one of humanity's most defining creations; its music.

Driven by the desire to perform music for themselves, the four formed the group Ensemble Q (アンサンブルQ, Ansanburu Q), and found joy in performing even as the seasons and years went by. Fifty years later, Hoichi met a young Anri, who had stopped by to listen to the ensemble, and their shared enjoyment for music sparked a connection that lasted until the present day, when Anri had received a concert ticket for Ensemble Q's performance which, unbeknownst to her, would be their last. Despite their discovery, the Cicada Men hadn't forgotten their goal, and instead incorporated their hobby into it.

As the Garadama drew near, Ensemble Q reluctantly prepared for their final performance. The next day, the Garadama landed in Futo City, and seeing that the time had come, the musicians began their first piece, which released Garamon from its Tilsonite capsule. As the symphony continued, Garamon continued its rampage, defeating Earth Garon and giving Ultraman Blazar a difficult time, and eventually left the Ultra in a pinch by knocking him to the ground and repeatedly stomping on his Color Timer. By analyzing the environmental wave forms emitted by Garamon and an unknown source, Anri made the connection between the robot kaiju and Ensemble Q, who were playing nearby, and made a dash for the concert.

Anri burst into the venue, and a brief glimpse of Hoichi's true form made her realize that they were not from this planet. The other ensemble members put down their instruments and prevented Anri from going any further as Hoichi continued his solo performance. But once she realized Hoichi's true intentions, Anri pulled her gun and made the shot, wounding Hoichi's hand and rendering him unable to play. With the connection to Garamon severed, Hoichi expressed his gratitude and disbanded the ensemble, letting his bandmates free to find their own lives on Earth, as the curtains fell on his final performance.Planet of Music

Trivia

  • Actors:
  • The names of the four Ensemble Q members are derived from a set of cicada species native to Japan:
    • Hoichi Tsukushi (筑士 芳一, Tsukushi Hōichi): Tsuku-tsuku-bōshi (Meimuna opalifera)
    • Cicci Kuroiwa (黒岩 チッチ, Kuroiwa Chicchi): Chitchi-zemi (Kosemia radiator)
    • Michi Niize (新瀬 三智, Niize Michi): Niinii-zemi (Platypleura kaempferi)
    • Kanade Higurashi (日暮 奏, Higurashi Kanade): Higurashi (a.k.a. evening cicada (Tanna japonensis))
  • The music pieces played during Ensemble Q's final concert are a cover of the Ultra Q opening theme and "Tilsonite Genesis" (チルソナイト創世紀, Chirusonaito Sōseiki), an original piece composed for the episode. In Anri's recollection, the piece performed by Ensemble Q was titled "Meeting of the Wind" (風の出逢い, Kaze no deai).
    • According to the episode's director, Tomonobu Koshi, the initial plan was for Ensemble Q to perform classical music. However, during a meeting with Hideki Togi he suggested three original songs, leading to the final decision to use original music.[2]
  • The music performance scenes featuring Ensemble Q in seasons were inspired by the seasons sequence in the 1999 film Notting Hill.[3]
  • The Cicada Human mask from Ultraman Taiga was reused for the alien's appearance, while the suit was newly constructed.
  • The Cicada Men being associated with orchestral music directly references the characteristic diverse mating and territorial calls of real cicadas, which are often referred to as songs.
  • The prop of the Cicada Human spaceship is normally on display at Kaiju Sakaba, and was used for its appearance in the series.[4]
  • When Anri first meets Hoichi Tsukushi, the line "Well, we're more like semi-pros" was improvised by his actor, Hideki Togi, and is a pun on the Japanese reading for Cicada Human, Semi Ningen, after his son Norichika Togi, who plays Cicci Kuroiwa, joked that "Only Semi Ningen can be semi-pros".[5]
  • According to Hoichi, the group came to Earth 60 years prior, a couple of years before Ultra Q premiered. Additionally, their group name, Ensemble Q, references the title of the series.

Ultraman Story 0

In this manga, the Cicada Humans are the ones responsible for altering the Plasma Sun; the end result of their actions is their transformation into the recognizable Alien Baltans, the people of the Land of Light's transformation into Ultras and the creation of numerous monsters. As the Baltans, they went on to be the main antagonist of the manga until their defeat at the hands of Ultraman. They were then followed by the Universal Alliance, a group composed of different evil aliens who operated on their orders. The Baltans were also the reason Earth was home to so many monsters. The Baltans were conducting horrific experiments on the various monsters from across the universe; as part of the experiments to weaponize them, they sent a probe filled with various tadpole-like creatures to Earth. The tadpoles had the DNA of the numerous monsters that they had captured and experimented on and would grow to be the various monsters that were seemingly "native" to Earth that the Ultras fought over the years. The Cicada People appear in the Redman comic series as seemingly the main antagonistic force. For years since 1976, they have been filming Redman's endless crusade against monsters and aliens through various cameras and such. Their reason for doing so is unknown; it could be for research or entertainment, but it is not truly known. Said footage was accidentally broadcast to Earth, letting humanity see Redman's monster slaughter when they weren't meant to. It is later hinted that Redman and the monsters now know that they're being recorded.
