"So the secret of your strength lies with having good allies? I lost, Ultraman Dyna. Farewell."

―Gregore, Fight! Dyna vs. Dyna.

Gregore (グレゴール人, Guregōru Jin, lit. Gregore Man) is a shapeshifting alien fighter who traveled the universe seeking opponents to challenge to a battle to prove his strength. Arriving on Earth, Gregore challenged Ultraman Dyna to solidify his reputation and see who was the better fighter but lost the ensuing duel. After accepting his loss in a dignified manner, Gregore returned to space to continue his journey.

Subtitle: Space Martial Artist (宇宙格闘士, Uchū Kakutō-shi)

Conception[]

Gregore's Blitz Ring is designed by the art director Yuji Terai to be based on a sword, despite the original script intended them to be stone pillars.

The origin for Imit-Dyna's Miracle Type was ambiguous; in the 1998 special editing magazine, it was said to be a newly modeled suit specifically for suit actor Kazuya Shimizu, hence it was later modified into the real Dyna's Miracle Type suit in later appearances. Character designer Hiroshi Maruyama in his photobook contradicted this claim by stating that the suit was made from modifying an existing suit.

History[]

Ultraman Dyna[]

Gregore was an alien from Planet M16, known to teleport all around the known universe seeking powerful entities to defeat. Eventually, he wandered to Earth; seeking to challenge Dyna. He released a Mons-Ahgar II and defeated it before Asuka to prove his strength. Gregore forces Asuka to accept his challenge; threatening to unleash more space monsters if their match were to be refused. Although faster and more powerful, Imit-Ultraman Dyna was finally defeated after getting in a Cross Counter Punch with Dyna in Strong Type and getting his face smashed in half with the Cross Counter Punch. After the duel, Gregore admitted defeat graciously, and, acknowledging Dyna's strength, departed Earth and returned to space.

Trivia[]

  • Actor: Hiroshi Miyasaka (Human form and speaking voice)
    • Hiroshi Miyasaka would later on portray Ginga Yumeboshi, the host of the eponymous Ultraman Nice, which makes it an ironic casting choice to his previous role as Gregore.
  • Suit actor: Tomoharu Nishizawa, Kazuya Shimizu (Imit-Dyna)
    • Even before Imit-Dyna, Shimizu briefly portrayed the real Dyna in early episodes of the series, wearing Koji Nakamura's suits before he receives his own tailor-made ones, courtesy from Imit-Dyna's appearance.
  • In contrast to previous aliens who impersonated Ultras as means of tarnishing the original's reputation, Gregore is an antagonist who only wanted to fight Ultraman Dyna for the thrill of a battle, and that his impersonation is to prevent from being mistaken as an enemy. However, he was forced to attack the civilians if they interfered with him.
  • Gregore’s homeworld, Planet M16, is a reference to the Eagle Nebula (Messier 16), which has the same classification in Charles Messier’s Catalogue of Nebulae and Star Clusters. In real life, M16 is not in the constellation of Hercules, but rather in the neighboring constellation of Serpens.
  • Gregore's transformation pose when turning into Imit-Ultraman Dyna is reminiscent of the way Hideki Go transforms into Ultraman Jack, by raising his hand in the air.
  • He, along with Mons-Ahgar II, was referenced by the Spark Dolls Troupe in episode 37 of New Ultraman Retsuden.

Ultraman Decker[]

"I am the strongest martial arts champion in the universe... the Steel Phenomenon, Grace! Begin the three count of doom!"

―Grace.

Gregore Grace as he appears in Ultraman Decker.

A Gregore named Grace (グレース, Gurēsu) had earned the nickname of the Steel Phenomenon (鋼の魔人, Hagane no Majin), being a renowned martial artist who challenged opponents for fame and earnings. Despite being far past his prime, he and his daughter Mika (ミカ) went to the Earth to challenge the Ultra-Ancient Giant of Light for his final battle before retiring, but at the time, the Earth had already become peaceful and Trigger was no longer around.

The Spheres attacked soon after, casting their barrier around the Earth, trapping both Grace and Mika inside. To continue living their lives, Grace attempted to find a normal job as a human, but it was difficult for him. He and his daughter subsisted themselves in a cheap household, occasionally resorting to eating bread crusts given out for free by a local bakery. However, Grace's ageing coupled with the prolonged fighting in his youth had taken a toll on his body and left him physically weakened with a shortened life span, striking him with occasional chest pains.

About a year later, Mika managed to track down Kanata Asumi and took a photo of him with the Ultra D Flasher, intending to blackmail him into fighting with Grace as it was her father's wish to fight with an Ultraman. However, upon arriving at their house, Asumi learned that Grace had no intention to fight Decker especially after Mika had blackmailed him into arriving.[1] Not long after, a Red King appeared and rampaged at Natsumi City, endangering Mika. Grace transformed and fought against the monster with GUTS-Select's help until it retreated. To thank Grace for his efforts and after hearing of his current situation, Taiji Murahoshi agreed to challenge him in a match, despite his teammates' concerns. Both parties train for the day of the duel and after a coincidental run in, Murahoshi decided to cook for Grace and Mika.

On the day, GUTS-Select sent out the Nursedessei, GUTS Falcon and GUTS Hawk while deploying Asumi, Soma Ryumon and Ichika Kirino on the ground. However, just as the match begun, the ground split apart and the same Red King who retreated had returned, now modified into Sphere-Red King. Asumi transformed into Ultraman Decker to fight against Red King in hopes of preventing it from interfering in the match between Grace and GUTS-Select, but he was eventually overwhelmed. Grace called off the match and gave the win to GUTS-Select to fight against Sphere-Red King and to get rid of the monster, GUTS-Select decided to use the GUTS Gryphon's new weapon, Hyper Thorn Laser, to shoot at Red King. Grace held the monster down for a clear shot, uncaring that he would get caught in the explosion. Fortunately, Decker was able to summon Miclas, Agira and Windom out of their Mons Dimension Cards through the Ultra Dual Sword, allowing them to drag Grace away before he was injured. Returning back to his human form, Grace was exhausted and fainted. He later woke up in a medical facility under the TPU's care, surrounded by GUTS-Select and his daughter. Standing Tall for Someone Special

Trivia[]

  • Actors: Koji Nakamura (Grace), Haruna Enomoto (Mika)[2]
    • Nakamura's casting as Grace is pertinent, as he was active alongside the previous Gregore's Kazuya Shimizu and Shunsuke Gondo as the three main suit actors during the era of TDG (Tiga, Dyna and Gaia).[3]
  • Suit actor: Yoshiki Kuwabara
  • Mika's role in the episode's beginning is a reference to Natsumi Kudo, an aspiring photographer from Gregore's debut episode in Dyna who blackmails Asuka to provide her entrance to TPC. Additionally given the context of the picture, it is implied that she was actively stalking Kanata (and to a lesser extent, the new GUTS-Select) from behind the scenes prior to her debut.
  • Grace's robe in his true form is reused from Nostra from Ultraman Orb.
  • Grace is the second alien to have a unique rise scene like an Ultra, after Kerus, who had a real-time rise.
  • Grace's Blitz Ring reuses Juda Spectre's Bat Caliber as its corner posts, and manifests already in place when Grace grows to his full size, as opposed to the original, which fell from the sky into place after being summoned.

Ultraman Decker Finale: Journey to Beyond[]

Grace and Alien Metron Nigel came to help after the GUTS-Select headquarters was seized by Gibellus and his henchmen. They first freed both Taiji Murahoshi and Sawa Kaizaki from their captors before formulating a plan together to retake the base. Grace disguised himself as an Alien Pedan, pretending to have captured Dinas while an Alien Bado had caught Kanata, bringing them to Gibellus. When their guard was let down, Grace revealed himself and the others began their counterattack, taking on all the aliens while Gibellus escaped. Ultraman Decker Finale: Journey to Beyond

Gregore (Decker)

Stats
  • Height: 55 m, 1.8 ~ 55 m (Decker)
  • Weight: 47,000 t, 74 kg ~ 47,000 t (Decker)
  • Origin: Planet M16 in the Hercules Constellation, Planet Gregore[4]
  • Weakness: In Ultraman Decker, Grace's years of fighting and the injuries sustained during his bouts have caused him to suffer frequent chest pains. This also occurs when Grace is at his full size, giving opponents an opening to strike him.
Powers and Weapons
  • Dimensional Portal: Gregore can summon a pro-wrestling ring, camera saucer and Mons-Ahgar II.
  • Blitz Ring (電撃リング, Dengeki Ringu): To provide a location for his battles against his chosen opponents, Gregore can summon a pro-wrestling ring formed by a quartet of swords acting as post corners. True to its name, the ring generates an electrical charge to prevent the opponent from leaving until the end of their bout once inside. While the first Gregore summons his Blitz Ring after he increases his size, Grace's Blitz Ring manifests alongside his larger size.
  • Shape-shifting: Gregore can transform, changing his appearance to his human form or his Imit-Ultraman Dyna form. Dyna Strong Type's punch is strong enough to shatter the disguise.
  • Size Change: Gregore can change his size from human to giant. Especially in Ultraman Decker, Grace's act of doing so has him provided with a rising scene.

Imit-Ultraman Dyna (ニセウルトラマンダイナ, Nise Urutoraman Daina) is the form Gregore took to impersonate the Ultra during his arrival on Earth. In against Mons-Ahgar II, he took a form resembling Flash Type, which is nigh-identical to the real one, save for the black shading around his eyes and his curled feet.

While fighting the real Dyna, Gregore sticks to having his disguise resembling Miracle Type, which is differentiated from the real Dyna's Miracle Type by the slight shading around its eyes, pointed feet, and additional black and gold accents on its body, all of which are absent from the template's appearance.

  • Increased Speed and Stamina: Imit-Ultraman Dyna has overall greater stamina and speed than Ultraman Dyna. As such, he is able to perform various inhuman abilities such as delivering rapid flying kick to his opponents in mid-air.
  • Dark Slash (ダークスラッシュ, Dāku Surasshu): Imit-Ultraman Dyna can fire energy blast that are at the same power level as Dyna's energy blast.
  • Dark Solgent Beam (ダークソルジェント光線, Dāku Sorujento Kōsen): Imit-Ultraman Dyna can fire a pink colored version of Dyna's Solgent Beam that is twice as powerful (However in Ultraman Fighting Evolution 3, the beam is a complete dark color; a negative of Dyna's cyan and white Solgent Beam, being red and black).
    • Triple Solgent Beam (トリプルソルジェント光線, Toripuru Sorujento Kōsen): Imit-Dyna combines his Dark Solgent Beam with the same attack from Dyna and Ultraman Dyna (Parallel Isotope). While doing so, he is seen charging up in the same manner as Dyna's Empowered Solgent Beam.

The Imit-Ultraman Dyna figure was later released again as an EX in 2002 with Terranoid. Imit-Ultraman Dyna's two releases had a very minor difference: that being that the 1998 version had a white Color Timer (possibly to attempt for a glossy look) while the 2002 version had a blue Color Timer. The eyes are also painted in a white-and-yellow gradient to evoke the helmet's glowing eyes.
Unlike the previous toy, this release's data card correctly references his original homeworld: Nebula M16 in the Hercules Constellation. The photo also features him fighting with Dyna, albeit in a different position.
