Cathy is a monster that appeared in episode 29 of Ultraman 80.

Conception

Etymology

Cathy was named for the "Kiya Valley" were it lived. The name was given by the town's people, who gave the monster a Western name in the same vein as the Loch Ness Monster, Nessie. This was in order to make awareness of the monster's existence might, so that it could possibly bring tourists to the Kiya Valley area. Older kaiju that appear in the Ultraman Series would usually get there names from their own legends. Cathy's naming scheme is a more modern in these regard, as it was named more to be catchy for tourism.

History

Ultraman 80

Every hundred years, a monster was said to appear in the Kiya Valley's village. In that year, the village chief decided to use the legend as a tourist attraction strategy, placing fraudulent records of monster roars in various areas, and had the monster named Cathy, after their own village. However, the real monster did eventually awake.

When UGM arrived, they could not faze the creature with their weapons. However, they found that Cathy would run out of energy if it did not eat meat. When the kaiju tried to eat two villagers, Ultraman 80 appeared. 80 and the monster battled, while Cathy tried to eat the hero himself. 80 managed to defend himself until the monster collapsed from hunger.

80 then flew the monster to a place where it could return to sleep undisturbed.

Trivia

• Cathy's roar is a reused Gabara roar.
• Cathy uses a modified Crescent suit.
• Cathy was compared by UGM members to Ghostron from Return of Ultraman. However, the episode exaggerated a few key features, including that Cathy being four times bigger and requires to eat 1000 kg meats to stay active.

• Burrowing: As Cathy only appeared once a few hundred years, the monster can remain submerged underground while still being alive and unharmed.
