Gobnu (ゴブニュ, Gobunyu) are robots that existed to stop civilizations attempting to utilize the power of the Maxima Overdrive. They have multiple variations, including Gobnu (Vaha) (ゴブニュ(ヴァハ), Gobunyu (Vaha)), their gigantic combination, Gobnu (Giga) (ゴブニュ(ギガ), Gobunyu (Giga)), and when combined with elements of their Mechanical Island: Gobnu (Ogma) (ゴブニュ(オグマ), Gobunyu (Oguma)).

Etymology[]

The name Gobnu comes from Goibniu, the metalsmith of the Tuatha Dé Danann from Irish mythology. According to legend, Goibniu, a member of the Trí Dée Dána (Three Gods of Art) was the god of metalworking and hospitality, and is said to have furnished feasts for the gods.

History[]

Ultraman Tiga[]

Gobnu (Vaha)[]

What the Gobnu were or where they came from before their invasion of Tokyo was unknown, but they were created to keep humans away from finding out the immeasurable power of the Maxima Overdrive technology, a matter-antimatter powered device which gave off pure light as a waste product. When the TPC began developing the technology, the Gobnu (Vaha) were dispatched to Earth, where they stalked the streets of Tokyo at night. Meanwhile, Rena discovered their Mechanical Island while testing the Maxima Overdrive engine in space, despite it being undetectable to the TPC's radars.

After countless reports of the "Steel Masks" (鋼鉄の仮面, Kōtetsu no Kamen), GUTS was sent to investigate and soon found a single Gobnu (Vaha) walking across the street. Shinjoh shot the robot with his Hyper Gun and was surprised to learn it was hollow inside. The TPC began to collect the remains of the others and keep them in the GUTS base, but when they detected the Maxima Overdrive's power from the TPC's newly activated super-ship, the Artdessei, they revived and attacked. The GUTS members were ordered to board the Artdessei while Daigo fended off the Gobnu, keeping them at bay until the Artdessei lifted off. In order to pursue the ship, the Gobnu smashed through a wall of the GUTS Base and combined into Gobnu (Giga) in the ocean.

Gobnu (Giga)[]

Giga

Giga arises

As the basement began to flood, Daigo transformed into Ultraman Tiga to fight Gobnu (Giga). However, its strength proved to be superior to Tiga's, as it pinned him down and choked him. Tiga switched to Power Type and forced Gobnu (Giga) off of him, then managed to land a few hits on the robot. At the same time, the Artdessei engaged the Mechanical Island, but found their weapons had little effect.

Tiga tossed the robot to the ground and elbow dropped him, but while Gobnu (Giga) laid on the sea floor, it used the opportunity to grab Tiga from behind and hold him down. Suddenly, the lights on his head began to blink and go off, signaling it planned to self-destruct to destroy Tiga alongside it. Tiga, his Color Timer already flashing red, struggled to break free, as Iruma and Yazumi watched in concern. GUTS to the Sky Part 1

With the last of his strength, Ultraman Tiga managed to kick off Gobnu (Giga)'s right leg and escape. He then lifted Gobnu (Giga) out of the ocean and into the air, but vanished after running out of power, leaving Gobnu (Giga) to explode in the sky and out of harm's way.

In space, a swarm of Gobnu emerged from the Mechanical Island and attacked the Artdessei, which was eventually pulled into a door within the Island, trapping them inside. Back at the Dive Hangar, Yazumi experimented on a component of the Gobnu, allowing GUTS to question the robots, learning of their intentions and their weakness, using the Maxima Overdrive power in reverse. Daigo headed to the Mechanical Island in the Snow White and notified the Artdessei crew of the plan.

Gobnu (Ogma)[]

As they started to transmit the Maxima Overdrive in reverse, Gobnu (Ogma) was formed. Daigo quickly transformed, but, Gobnu (Ogma) outclassed Tiga using electro blasts and began to torture him. The GUTS crew unleashed their Maxima Overdrive through their cannon to destroy the robot, then Tiga used his Zeperion Beam on the island, vanquishing both threats. GUTS to the Sky Part 2

Stats
  • Height: 2 m
  • Weight: 350 kg
Powers and Weapons
  • Super Strength: Gobnu (Vaha) are extremely powerful, as they can easily lift humans and throw them a far distance.
  • Durability: Gobnu (Vaha) are able to stand shots from the Hyper Gun, but being shot deactivates them until they come in contact again with the Maxima Overdrive power.
  • Flight: Gobnu (Vaha) are capable of flight.
  • Combine: Gobnu (Vaha) are able to combine themselves into the powerful Gobnu (Giga)

Gobnu (Giga)

Stats
  • Height: 60 m
  • Weight: 80,000 t
  • Weakness: Gobnu (Giga) has a very weak frame, thus his body parts can be pulled out by force.
Powers and Weapons
  • Super Strength: Gobnu (Giga) possesses the strength of 3 million horsepower and can rival those of Tiga Power Type in terms of brute strength.
  • Durability: Due to mainly being made from metal, Giga can resists the melee attacks from Ultraman Tiga.
  • Time Bomb: Gobnu (Giga) has a built in bomb that begins countdown when Giga wills it to. When measuring the time limit, its Mono Eyes (モノアイ, Mono Ai) blink before fading one-by-one. Although it never hit anything, it is estimated to contain the power of two atomic bombs.
  • Flight: Gobnu (Giga) is capable of extremely fast flight, completely outclassing that of GUTS Wing 1.

Gobnu (Ogma)

Stats
  • Height: 67 m
  • Weight: 88,000 t
Powers and Weapons
  • Super Strength: Gobnu (Ogma) has 5 million horsepower of brute strength.
  • Durability: Due to mainly being made from metal, Ogma can resists the melee attacks from Ultraman Tiga.
  • Electro Blast: Gobnu (Ogma) is able to launch electricity blasts from the "horn" on his head.

Mechanical Island
Gobnu Mechanical Island

Mechanical Island (機械島, Kikai Shima) is an artificial island that houses the Gobnu.

Stats
  • Diameter: 3 km
  • Height: Unknown
  • Weight: Unknown
Powers and Weapons
  • Lightining Strike: By orbiting around Earth, Mechanical Island can release lightning that can cause massive damage and large fires.
  • Attraction: The island can attract sources of Maxima Overdrive energies (etc: Artdessei and Snow White). But it will only reject when the Maxima Overdrive usage is reversed.
