Biography

"Humans, assimilate into one with them, they were once humans like you. Afraid of limited lifespan, they fought one another, and finally drove their planet to the brink of doom. But they have overcame it. The people, along with every organic, inorganic substance, finally merged with the planet itself, into a perfect lifeform, which is me. There is still time, let me show you the way before Earth perishes. I am the "future", that Earth heading toward!"

―Gran-Sphere's self-introduction and "offer" to humanity, Final Chapter III: Toward Tomorrow...

"All becomes one."

―Mother Spheresaurus, The Light Far Beyond

The Spheres[3] (スフィア, Sufia) are the main antagonists of Ultraman Dyna and Ultraman Decker.[4][5] They are a hive mind of life forms from space that attack planets with life, seeking to assimilate them to bring "peace".

History[]

Ultraman Dyna[]

The Spheres first appeared when Training Squad ZERO were having their first outer space training, in which Asuka got the highest score and successfully tagged Kariya and Ryo. The Spheres then proceeded to attack the minor auto-pilot station that they were around and were later driven away. However, they gunned down Asuka's GUTS Wing 1 leading to him meeting the mysterious light while in space.

While the Spheres began to hail an assault on the TPC Mars Base, they fused themselves with a Mars mineral which formed Darambia and walked its way to the base until a new Ultra that would later be named Ultraman Dyna emerged and fought Darambia. A New Light (Part 1) Later, the Ultra and Super GUTS forces battle them until a remaining one left, merging into Giralen and make its way to Super GUTS base until the Ultra vanquished it with his Revolium Wave. A New Light (Part 2)

The Spheres were absent until returning in episode 35 and near the end of the series where they would be responsible for the creation of synthetic monsters such as Neo Gaigaraid, Geomos, Graikis, and finally Zeluganoid after fusing with TPC's artificial Ultra, Terranoid. Final Chapter I: A New Shadow

After Zeluganoid was destroyed, the Spheres left and rejoined with the Gran-Sphere (グランスフィア, Guransufia), which devoured several planets in the Solar System. Meanwhile, Super GUTS developed a campaign (Battle Against Spheres (BAS) Campaign) and Ryo flies Asuka home after finding him rescued by Daigo Madoka. Final Chapter II: Solar System Annihilation During the battle at Saturn, the Neo Maxima Cannon was used to destroy Gran-Sphere's most powerful monster: Neo Gaigaraid. However, the cannon was not powerful enough to kill Gran-Sphere and Saturn was lost. A final effort was made to kill Gran-Sphere at Mars. After the battle (read the Shin Asuka article for more on the BAS Campaign), Gran-Sphere was destroyed. But her death would bring about the creation of a wormhole, which pulled Dyna inside before closing. After Gran-Sphere's death, all of her victims were released. Some time later, the wormhole reopened, bringing Dyna to its destination, the Land of Light. Final Chapter III: Toward Tomorrow...

Ultraman Saga[]

Spheres attacking a TPC colony on Mars

Several surviving Spheres existed after the defeat of Gran-Sphere and attacked the TPC Mars Base again as they have done in the first episode of Dyna, only to be driven off by Super GUTS. However, during the raid, several were captured by an Alien Bat and later fed to the developing Hyper Zetton, Hyper Zetton (Gigant), in a form that is rather gruesome; having Gigant Zetton's spikes penetrate the Spheres completely before dragging them in for feeding.

Later in the final battle between Hyper Zetton and Ultraman Saga, the absorbed Spheres were released to awaken the modified Kaiju that Alien Bat created. Ultraman Saga

Tiga, Dyna, and Ultraman Gaia Novel: The Adventure in Hyperspace[]

The Spheres do not appear for the novel, save for Neo Geomos as one of their many monster progenies. It is stated by Charija that the reason why he kidnapped Neo Geomos as part of his forces is to get his hands on the Sphere's essences, thus by combining his monsters into Demon Gyrares XIV would provide it with the Sphere's genetic makeup and (hopefully) giving it the advantage against Tiga, Dyna and Gaia. Pre-Ultraman Decker[]

In the distant future where mankind has progressed to the outer space, the Spheres commenced their attack on advanced planets, intending to absorb its civilians and creatures into their own being. An extension of their modus operandi includes creating a Spheresaurus to absorb the targeted planet's energy and use it to enhance the Sphere Barrier to the point where it shrinks, allowing for a bigger Spheresaurus to appear as a result. To counter their invasion threat, a counterattack team is formed, consist of an alliance between various race (mankind and Planet Bazdo to name a few), the future Yuzare, Dyna and eventually Decker Asumi after obtaining the means to become Ultraman Decker. The Spheres would later target Planet Bazdo, causing one of its people named Agams, to defect to their side and creates a time-traveling device to jump into the Earth's distant past, bringing along the creatures with him. A Promise for Tomorrow

Ultraman Decker[]

The Spheres arrived in the present day, approximately 7 years after Evil Trigger's defeat wherein they start their attack on the Martian colony and the Earth that Ultraman Trigger once defended, appearing in Sorafune City in Japan, Sydney in Australia, New York in America, Paris in France and Giza in Egypt. The King Spheres released Sphere Soldiers to shoot down any resisting forces and devour any humans in their way, while the King Spheres prepared to set up a barrier around the Earth. A Sphere consumed Kanata Asumi, and within it, he was granted the light of Ultraman Decker from his descendant, who burst forth from the Sphere who consumed him and fought against the Spheresaurus, destroying the monster before he flew upwards to combat the Spheres in space. Unfortunately, Decker was brought down and the Spheres succeeded in placing their Sphere Barrier over the Earth, preventing anything from entering and leaving the planet while cutting off contact with the rest of the solar system.[6] Day of the Attack This forces the TPU to reorganize GUTS-Select into an Anti-Sphere unit to combat them.[4][5]

A year passed with no activity, until Deathdrago and Gomora emerge. Kanata's Resolve The Spheres descend and assimilate Gomora to create Sphere Gomora, becoming the first instance of a Sphere Synthetic Monster being created from an existing lifeform.[6] Move Out, GUTS-Select! On Mars, the Spheres actively threaten the colony's civilians, with ex-GUTS-Select members and Kengo keeping their presence at bay. At one point, Akito manages to get an inactive Sphere Soldier specimen that allows him to reinforce their namesake Mons Dimension Card with the ability to mimic its user with Sphere properties. This allows Ultraman Trigger to enter the Earth's atmosphere by phasing through the Sphere Barrier to take on the threat of Megalothor while returning to outer space with Carmeara in suit. The Light of Hope from the Red Planet Light and Darkness, Again By the time Neomegas appears and is destroyed, the Spheres seems to have an even more active role and as Sawa stated, having adopted a new attack plan. They first procure Neomegas's leftover cell to recreate it as their servant and a group of them goes as far as to join their monster in overpowering Decker. The platoon of Sphere fuses with Neomegas to inject an energy substance to underground and the next day separates fight against TPU forces. Most of them are eliminated by the gunfires while a few merged with Sphere-Neomegas to grant its arm blades, which unfortunately gets obliterated alongside the monster itself by Terraphaser. Neomegas Strikes Back

The Spheres once again actively involved in the frontline, this time around reforming Spheresaurus and absorbing Neomegas' energy to empower the monster and later on the Sphere Barrier. They initially get the upper hand through Agams' help via the hijacked Terraphaser, Birth of a Dark God but Decker turns the tables by acquiring Dynamic Type and destroys both opponents with his display of new attacks. A Promise for Tomorrow During Kanata and Kengo's investigation on the TPU Moon Base, the Spheres had taken the abandoned base as their nest and amassed a few space robots around it as potential vessels. Briefly capturing Kengo, the Spheres searched through his memories for the location of the Eternity Core, having learned of it when Trigger fought against Sphere-Megalothor before they were forced to possess the Galactron MK2 as their vessel against the two Ultras, but the robot was defeated. Warriors on the Moon

Having been foiled many times and growing increasingly desperate to have his revenge against Decker, Agams interrogated the Spheres into the Terraphaser to increase its power, even when it come at the cost of his own memories. Fighting with Ultraman Decker one more time, Agams became amnesiac in the aftermath as they blew each other way. The Fall of Bazdo The Spheres attacked again, triggering Agmas' memories to return as he used the Terraphaser to command the Spheres into forming Sphere Obelisks to hasten the Sphere Barrier's consumption of the Earth, but their activities had been detected by the Mother Sphere, who traveled from beyond space and time, appearing outside the Earth from a wormhole before fighting Ultraman Trigger. The Sky of Despair

Following Agams and Kanata's final battle, the Sphere Barrier surrounding Earth was broken with the destruction of the Sphere Obelisks, but Trigger and the Mother Spheresaurus descended on the Earth immediately afterwards. The monster defeated both Ultras and severely damaged the Terraphaser, killing Agams inside it before proceeding to drain the energy of the Eternity Core from beyond space-time, managing to recreate the Sphere Barrier once again. End of a Dream After regrouping within the downed Nursedessei, GUTS-Select and Kengo had to come up with a plan - Operation T/D/G[7] - to defeat Mother Spheresaurus, finding out about its weak point, the core on its chest, from data left behind in the Phase Riser. Challenging Mother Spheresaurus again, Kengo transformed into Glitter Trigger Eternity to forcefully drain the Eternity Core energy that Mother Spheresaurus had absorbed, transferring that power to Kanata so that he could transform into Ultraman Decker, who then fought the Mother Spheresaurus with the remaining arsenal of GUTS-Select.

Mother Spheresaurus then unleashed a horde of Spheres to absorb everything within the vicinity, stating its intentions to become one with all life to remove all sadness and conflict, but Kanata and the others rejected its will, stating that they will take their own futures for themselves. Using all of his energy, Decker fired his Selgend Beam through Mother Spheresaurus' core, destroying the monster once and for all. With the Mother Sphere defeated, the remaining Spheres and the Sphere Barrier finally disappeared as well, reconnecting communications between Earth and space as the people from Mars started to return. Gran-Sphere

The Gran-Sphere (グランスフィア, Guran Sufia) is a gigantic Sphere that has assimilated every life form of a certain planet, along with the entire planet itself. Unlike other previously-seen Spheres that have communicated only by hijacking the Cosmonet, the Gran-Sphere capable of direct communication on its own.

Stats
  • Height: 12,756 km
  • Weight: Unknown
  • Origin: Near Pluto
Powers and Weapons
  • Absorption: Gran-Sphere can absorb entire planets into itself similar to a black hole. Doing so will also unleash lightning and energy waves. It appears that the absorbed matter is sent into the World of the Land of Light.
  • Telepathy: Gran-Sphere can communicate with others telepathically.
  • Sonic Blasts: Gran-Sphere can fire red sonic blasts from her "mouth".
  • Barrier: Gran-Sphere has a barrier on her that moves beams and projectiles sideways unless hits it directly into her "mouth".
  • Monster Illusions: Gran-Sphere can create illusions of past monsters that Dyna fought but they were easily seen destroyed by the Ultra's Flash Cycler.

King Sphere
King Sphere

A King Sphere (キングスフィア, Kingu Sufia) is a very large Sphere, capable of controlling the Sphere Soldiers.

Powers and Weapons
  • Portal: King Sphere can appear itself through a self-made portal, doing so allows it to avoid radar detection upon arrival.
  • Flight: The King Sphere can perform anti-gravity flight as its means of transportation.
  • Sphere Soldier Housing: The King Sphere act as a carrier ship, able to either carry or produce the Sphere Soldiers as its means of attacking.
  • Monster Creation: By combining a few Sphere Soldiers, the King Sphere can unleash Spheresaurus as one of its soldiers.
  • Sphere Barrier (スフィアバリア, Sufia Baria): Five King Spheres across the globe can combine their physical essence, as well as a few Sphere Soldiers into the mix to create a massive barrier capable of isolating an entire celestial body under their grasp, at the cost of the aforementioned five's own physicality. The barrier is able to prevent entry to Earth's atmosphere and vice versa, as well as any attempts at interstellar communication.[6] Through Spheresaurus' empowerment, the barrier can shrink towards the surface and eventually leading to the annihilation of the planet's natives before its imminent destruction.

Sphere Soldiers
Sphere Soldiers

Sphere Soldiers (スフィアソルジャー, Sufia Sorujā) are drones used by King Spheres to attack directly.

Powers and Weapons
  • S-Plasma (Sプラズマ, Esu Purazuma): A form of energy substance that is naturally within their physiology.
  • Portal: If the Sphere Soldiers are not carried by the King Spheres, then they can travel by creating a portal through unknown means above the sky.
  • Flight: The Sphere Soldiers can perform anti-gravity flight as their means of transportation.
  • Beam (光線, Kōsen): Spheres can fire green lasers from themselves.[8] While ineffective as an individual, the attack is dangerous if multiple Sphere Soldiers focus their fire to a single target en masse through salvo firing.
  • Separation: Like an amoeba, a Sphere Soldier can split itself into numerous copies as a form of self reproduction.[6]
  • Assimilation: Numerous Sphere Soldiers can combine with each other to form Spheresaurus. They can also merge with and rewrite the genetic information of a monster, enhancing them at the cost of their free will.[6]
    • Resurrection: Should they infect leftover of a deceased monster, the Spheres also have the ability to resurrect their targets from the dead before taking them over. In one instance, this results in Gijeran's reappearance in the present day.
    • Regeneration: The Sphere Soldiers can regenerate any dismembered organs of their target. While infecting Gomora, they are able to regrow the monster's severed tail and partly assimilating with Sphere-Neomegas regrows its severed front horn.
    • Empowerment: With Sphere-Neomegas, numerous Sphere Soldier can enhance the monster's pair of arms into different anatomies, either a pair of large front legs or a pair of arm blades.
  • Devouring: A single Sphere Soldier can devour smaller targets by simply absorbing them into its being.

Sphere Obelisk
Sphere Obelisk

Sphere Obelisk (スフィアオベリスク, Sufia Oberisuku) are a trio of pillars formed by the Sphere Soldiers through Terraphaser's help, allowing them to fulfill similar purpose as the Spheresaurus. The two lower pillars function to collect the energy, while the third and tallest pillar act as a transmitter.[9]

Powers and Weapons
  • Sphere Barrier Empowerment: The Sphere Obelisk drains the energy from the planet it was erected on and transmits it to the Sphere Barrier to further shrink it towards the surface.
  • Electromagnetic Wave: The Sphere Obelisk can unleash an enhanced form of EM wave that disables nearby electronics and aircrafts.

Monsters[]

Main article: Sphere Synthetic Monsters

When a Sphere merges with a mineral or a life form, it will result in the creation of artificial monsters. In the case of assimilated life forms, they will become obedient to the will of the Spheres. In Ultraman Dyna, their common abilities are generating barriers and evolving into Super Synthetic Monsters. In Ultraman Decker, their common abilities are generating shock waves that disrupt remote-controlled and automated devices, as well as enhancing the assimilated target with stronger physiology from their previous forms.[12]

Trivia[]

  • Gran-Sphere is a tribute to Vacuumon for their appetite of planets.
  • The Spheres are also playable characters in the Ultraman Fusion Fight!. Here, they are represented to the players as a group of five Sphere Soldiers in place of an individual being. Other than attacking by ramming themselves, their finishing move involves summoning other Sphere Soldiers to salvo fire against the opponent.
