"Ryu... Mebius and the Earth... are count on you."

―Serizawa's words, in Dark Clouds of Despair -Final Trilogy II-

Kazuya Serizawa (セリザワ・カズヤ, Serizawa Kazuya) is the first human host of Ultraman Hikari. Serizawa was originally thought dead until his reappearance under Hikari's control. Serizawa was the former captain of GUYS before Sakomizu replaced him.

Personality[]

Serizawa initially displayed a composed, talkative, yet slightly sharp personality. He had a strong sense of duty towards protecting the Earth and possessed extensive combat experience, which he imparted to his subordinate Ryu. During missions, he demonstrated remarkable leadership abilities.

However, upon becoming the host for Hikari, his demeanor transformed into one of greater silence, restraint, and disciplined adherence to Hikari's intentions. His primary motivation became following Hikari's guidance in his actions. As time passed, he gradually regained his original consciousness, rekindling his trust in humanity. This allowed him to reveal a more emotionally fused aspect of himself. With the passage of time, his consciousness gradually merged with that of Hikari.

History[]

Pre-Ultraman Mebius[]

Before Shingo Sakomizu took office, Serizawa served as the captain of GUYS. In his youth, he learned the "5 Ultra Oaths" from a friend, which instilled in him the core belief that his primary motivation in battle should be to "not rely on the power of others, maintain inner passion, and keep that passion burning within."

After joining GUYS, he became a METEOR test pilot under the guidance of Chief Maintenance Araiso. He has piloted many METEOR-equipped old fighter jets, including SSSP's Sub VTOL, Ultra Guard's Ultra Hawk No.1, MAT's MAT Arrow 1, TAC's TAC Arrow, and UGM's Silver Gull α. During the dawn of the development, engine burning and crashing were not uncommon, usually leaving Serizawa injured severely, but eventually led to the matured system for the later Gun Phoenix. Later, he passed on his extensive combat experience to his subordinate Ryu Aihara. On one occasion, when Ryu reviewed headquarters' records and saw that the Defense Team had hardly ever independently defeated monsters without relying on Ultraman's power, he felt disheartened. Serizawa conveyed his viewpoint to Ryu through the "5 Ultra Oaths," explaining that humanity had been repeatedly saved by Ultraman because Ultraman only appeared when the Defense Team fought to their limits. This belief also strengthened Ultraman's sense of responsibility for protecting the Earth, rekindling Ryu's confidence.Terrible Predator

As a result, throughout Ryu's growth, Serizawa played an essential role. It was due to this pivotal role that he earned Ryu's profound trust.

Ultraman Mebius[]

Kazuya merge Tsurugi

The moment the plane explodes, Serizawa is rescued by Tsurugi and takes over his body.

When Dinozaur first appeared in Earth's orbit, posing the first threat in 25 years, Serizawa along with the members of GUYS, piloted the Gun Crusader to engage in combat in space. However, as their teammates were defeated one after another, Serizawa piloted the fighter alone, sacrificing himself by crashing into the monster to save Ryu. His final words were, "Ryu, I entrust GUYS to you." After this heroic act, his fate became a mystery, and all that remained of him for Ryu was Serizawa's communicator. A Fateful Encounter

Initially, everyone believed he had perished, but in reality, his spirit was noticed by the Hunter Knight Tsurugi, who had accidentally arrived on Earth and sought revenge against Bogarl. Tsurugi realized he needed a human form or host to operate on Earth. Therefore, he chose Serizawa's body as his host and began secretly operating on Earth, completely controlling Serizawa's personality.

As time passed, Serizawa appeared before Ryu multiple times. During a battle when Bogarl emerged in the forest, GUYS and Mebius engaged in combat. Ryu saw Serizawa and called out to him. However, Serizawa, under the control of Tsurugi's consciousness, didn't recognize Ryu's identity and immediately transformed into Tsurugi, attempting to eliminate Bogarl. A Fateful Encounter

Afterward, Serizawa appeared before Mirai Hibino and revealed details about the events concerning Planet Arb, reiterating his warning not to obstruct him. Ryu, on the other hand, became perplexed by the memories of his past interactions with Serizawa and the multiple encounters with the revived "Serizawa." When Ryu reminisced about the past while standing on a cliff, Tsurugi sensed the inner connection between Serizawa and Ryu. Taking the initiative, Tsurugi materialized and engaged in conversation with Ryu, explaining the reasons behind choosing to inhabit Serizawa's body. Ryu was left shocked and saddened by the revelation, and he requested Tsurugi to release Serizawa's consciousness. However, Tsurugi rejected his plea.Terrible Predator

Kazuya Serizawa 014

Under the miracle of Mother of Ultra, Serizawa/Hikari was revived again.

As Ryu repeatedly called out to him during battles, Serizawa began to recall more of his past memories, gradually regaining self-awareness. His resurgence also marked a crucial turning point for Tsurugi's beliefs. After completing his vengeance against Bogarl and sacrificing his own life in the process, Tsurugi was guided by the Mother of Ultra and resurrected in the Land of Light. Serizawa's personality was fully restored, and he returned to the battlefield to aid Ultraman Mebius in defeating Dinozaur. Subsequently, Ryu bestowed upon him the title of "Ultraman Hikari," firmly believing that Serizawa had returned in the form of an Ultraman.Mother's Miracle

Ryu and GUYS members bid farewell to Serizawa.

As the human host of Hikari, Serizawa continued to join forces with GUYS and Mebius to defend Earth on numerous occasions. However, after witnessing and acknowledging Ryu's growth, he made the decision to depart from Earth and return to the Land of Light.Formation of Our Vow

In the period that followed, Alien Babarue took on the form of Tsurugi and arrived on Earth. Through acts of citywide destruction, they aimed to sow distrust among humans towards Hikari. To thwart Alien Babarue's scheme, Hikari returned to Earth once again. During a battle with the enemy, Hikari was attacked and had to revert to the identity of Serizawa, appearing before GUYS.

Serizawa candidly revealed to the higher-ups at GUYS headquarters that he was indeed Hikari. This action led to him being placed under surveillance and soft detention by GUYS leadership. In reality, this was a maneuver orchestrated by the high-ranking members of GUYS to prove Hikari's innocence and expose the deceptive plan of the Babarue alien. Encouraged by Run, Serizawa transformed back into Hikari and united with GUYS, successfully defeating Alien Babarue.

After the resolution of the incident, he bid farewell to GUYS once more, using the pretext of investigating Alien Babarue's plot and potential threats. He expressed sincere gratitude to GUYS and conveyed that Earth had become an irreplaceable planet to him. He offered special thanks to Ryu for making him Ultraman and then departed from Earth again. The Ultramarine Light and Shadow

In the final battle, he returned to Earth once again to confront Alien Empera. However, due to being overpowered, he ultimately failed and entrusted the Knight Brace to Ryu. After the battle's conclusion, he once again separated from Ryu and returned to the Land of Light alongside Zoffy.Words from the Heart -Final Trilogy III-

Ultraman Mebius Gaiden: Armored Darkness[]

"But even now, I am like dead, I don't exist anymore."

―Ryu hearing Serizawa's voice

Although it is believed that Serizawa is dead after the battle with Alien Empera, he was revealed to be alive and had completely assimilated with Hikari. While Ryu was in a trance with Ultraman King, Serizawa's voice was briefly heard by Ryu when Hikari appeared in front of Ryu as Hikari tells Ryu about the backstory of Armored Darkness and the Dark Sphere. He later called out to Ryu before Ryu merged with Hikari.Ultraman Mebius Gaiden: Armored Darkness

Transformation[]

Knight Brace: During his time as Hikari's/Tsurugi's host, Serizawa transformed two ways, one was by using the Knight Brace and the other was using the Travel Sphere ability to switch between forms. When using the Knight Brace as Tsurugi, his transformation scene was in front of a dark background and Tsurugi's rise was through a dark tunnel of crystal walls. As Hikari, his back ground was bright yellow and Hikari's rise was first a dark prismatic design which changed to green/yellow color upon his growth.

Powers and Weapons[]

  • Acceleration: When fighting Bogal's human form Serizawa was able to move at superhuman speeds.
  • Teleportation: Serizawa can teleport by a flash of blue light.
  • Strength: During his clash with Bogal, Serizawa showed enough strength to match the alien when they were pushing against each other.
  • Knight Brace: Serizawa is also in possession of the Knight Brace.
    • Knight Blade: Using the blade of the Knight Brace, Serizawa can cut through ordinary materials with impunity and fire arcs of energy.
  • Willpower: This is used by Serizawa to transform into Ultraman Hikari after he gave the Knight Brace to Mebius.
  • ESP: Serizawa can perceive events outside of his visual range.
  • Telepathy: Serizawa can speak to others through his mind.
