Yamaton (ヤマトン) was a battleship inspired Kaiju from Daiji Kazumine's manga adaptation of Ultraman.

Subtitle: Battleship Monster (軍艦怪獣, Gunkan Kaijū)

Conception

Etymology

Yamaton is named after the Imperial Japanese battleship Yamato, launched in 1940 and sunk in 1945 during World War II. In turn, Yamato is named after the ancient province of Yamato, corresponding to modern-day Nara Prefecture.

History

Ultraman

In the years following World War II, the wreckage of the once-mighty Yamato rested on the sea floor of the South Pacific. Small aquatic creatures (including barnacles and oysters) were merged with the wreck and transformed into biological tissue, gradually creating Yamaton's body. Soon it made its way to Tokunoshima and attacked the docks. Tanks and fighter jets tried to attack it but were magnetised to the monster. As Ultraman appeared, he tried to attack but being a former battleship, Yamaton's body is already durable to the hero's might, even the Spacium Beam had no effect. Soon Ultraman was magnetised. Unable to escape, his upper body was swallowed by Yamaton's mouth! In front of the crowd, Ultraman's body was gradually sucked into Yamaton and eventually whole his body was consumed. However, as Yamaton stood triumphantly, he had no idea that Ultraman had planned this all along, and the hero destroyed the monster from the inside out with a shot of his Spacium Beam.

Trivia

  • Yamaton originally was intended to appear in the Ultraman show, but due to time constraints, the beast wasn't used. Concept art of Yamaton's suit exist and eventually, a Yamato-themed ship was created in the form of Iron Rocks in Ultraseven, the invasion robot battleship of the Alien Mimy. This concept would be revisited again in Ultraman 80 with Barrack Ship, a rogue computer-controlled cargo ship whose AI had become sentient.
  • Despite being very obscure, even by Ultra Kaiju standards, Yamaton, and fellow manga kaiju, Tangilar, received toy versions of themselves created by Marusan.
  • In the manga, since Alien Baltan were revealed to be the main antagonists, it is possible that Yamaton's creation was partly their bidding, due to said alien race had released microscopic lifeforms around the Earth that used to create monsters fought by Ultraman and SSSP.
